Never has the challenge and need for a magazine to be really, really good been greater. Every magazine, in print and online, needs to give their readers a reason to invest and get involved. We need to reward them for their time. Every issue needs to deliver. The narrative needs to assure readers. That translates into what we’re all after, engagement.
Design is about connecting and establishing an empathy with the audience and its culture. An Art Director is a visual journalist, problem solve, and decision maker.
I love and respect words. The editor in me doesn’t know quite how to react when I hear that more people read fewer words. Of course, I adamantly believe that we should always talk up to the reader, not down. Sometimes, that can mean volume of copy. A great photograph or illustration can go a long way in saying all you need to.
